Please pray for my stepmother Susan Cannell May 1, 2007

Hey Guys, late Sunday Night my stepmother had a pretty rough fall. She tore her lip clear through to almost her nose (looked like knife wound from the movie “Pan’s Labrynth”), gashed her forehead, and hit her chin so hard that she overextended her neck and now her spinal cavity is narrowing with swelling, causing nerve issues and potential damage.
It has been proven that this forum is a great way to get a whole bunch of people praying- so please pray that her swelling goes down, and any damage is healed. She has a road of recovery ahead of her that will probably include neck surgery to address this issue as well as other chronic issues she has been struggling with.
Also pray for my Dad Steve, he has a host of heart problems and this stress is not helping in that arena. I stayed the night with him at Riverside last night- and he seems pretty frayed from the whole ordeal.
Thanks in advance for your prayers.
Jeff

I’m back… March 17, 2007

**quick note- I’m avoiding people right now until my immune system bounces back and I get some more energy**
Hey guys- I hope you have been able to keep abreast of our trip on John and Jordan’s blogs.
I got a little sick when I was over there. I was so fatigued I was sleeping day and night- with about 1 or two hours of energy. I started getting really sick on Sunday while I was preaching at Narin’s church. John says I looked ready to keel over during the second service. I eventually went to the SOS clinic (closest thing to a western hospital). They gave me 4 bags of saline and gave me a blood test. My white blood cel count was at 2,000 (should be bw 7,000 and 10,000). The next day my white blood cel count was down to 1,600. The doc reccommended I wait another two weeks before flying back- but I wanted to get home quickly to my family (and western medicine). According to JMC this little Drama was my intitiation into doing work in Cambodia
Meeting the kids in our orphanage and catching more vision was definitly worth all the other drama.
The flight was amazingly without drama (thanks to the prayers of all the kids in our orphanage) Jordan’s a great guy to travel with. Special thanks to Tim and Beth Koruna for making some special arrangments for us during our LA layover, and for helping Adrienne with the logistics of pickin me up.
Spent the morning at an OSU health clinic for sme blood work- praying that my blood is one the way back to normall.
I have so much blogs bouncing around in my head about the trip that I hope make it out one of these days.

Did anyone else take a fall while walking on ice today? It figures that I would mess my neck up before going to Cambodia. Tuesday night JMC, Jordy, Brooksy, and myself got together to hash out Trip details, now I’m just trying to hash out health details. Between vertigo, lower back, neck, etc problems I think I’m going to be bringing some pills with me! Your prayers would be appreciated.
I’m probably going to post a buncha videos of my family so I can watch them when I’m out of town. (I need to figure out my frame-rate issues on youtube.

I’ve been crazy the past week getting ready for my Flight to Cambodia. John has a blog that he keeps updated- I hope to follow his example- but probably won’t.
I look forward to meeting the children and staff of our orphanage for the first time.
I look forward to getting back to my ALPHA roots by preaching at a restaurant (an perhaps a church or two)
I look forward to seeing the beginning of Asia’s Hope’s (And Central Vineyard’s) first foray into the wacky world of micro-enterprise development (in the form of Coffee Shops around Cambodia, the family business for the fatherless!
I also look forward to hanging with John, Allison, and my cousin Jordan.
Pray for us!
Discover Your Strengths! (long post, worthwhile links) February 17, 2007

Following Uncle Chet’s advice I have been immersing myself in Marcus Buckingham’s material on Discovering Your Strengths. I got the book, took the test online, and have been working to let it change how I do my job and how I coach others. Kary Oberbrunner later turned us on to this remarkable DVD series that I promptly purchased. It arrived last night.
As I was watching the Trombone Players Wanted DVD series, Ian (my 8 year old little guy) walked up and sat on my lap. He focused on the clip for 14 minutes, and when it was over he asked if he could watch the whole thing. Adrienne walked in to tell him it was bedtime, and Ian proceeded to summarize the clip. He said:
“Mom, this dvd is about how you guys tell me to work hardest at the things I’m good at and to not give up. It’s about how it’s okay that I’m not very good in writing and music class, as long as I make sure to do my best at getting better at things I’m good at, like reading and speaking.”
He saw the correllation between how we are trying to parent (we recently got report cards) and what Buckingham is coaching people to do in their lives.
Adrienne let him stay up and watch more segments. We are going to re-watch the whole deal with Mommy and Kathleen on Monday.
Here is Buckingham’s Amazon Blog- he has a cool write-up about this film series: Check It Out!!
We spend so much time being ashamed and/or covering up our weaknesses that we ignore developing our strengths. I’m so glad Ian get’s to start out by feeling good about his strenghts.Buckingham defines a strenght as “anything you do that makes you feel stronger.”
It’s not just “being good” at something!
The goal of his material is to discover your talent themes and invest the motherload of your resources into developing your talents into strenghts!
btw- the underlying concepts are not new- almost 2,000 years ago the Apostle Paul wrote:
Romans 12: 4-8:
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
14Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. 15If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 16And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? 18But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. 19If they were all one part, where would the body be? 20As it is, there are many parts, but one body.
I Corinthians 12:21-26:
The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. . .
But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.
